QR Codes vs. Barcodes: What is the Difference?
Evolution of Scanning
While traditional 1D barcodes have served us well in supermarkets for decades, 2D QR codes represent a massive leap forward in technology.
1. Data Capacity
Barcodes: Can only hold about 20-25 characters (mostly numbers).
QR Codes: Can hold up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters. This allows them to store URLs, text, and contact info.
2. Readability
Barcodes must be scanned in a straight line. QR codes can be scanned from any angle (360 degrees), making them much faster and easier to use.
3. Error Correction
QR codes have built-in error correction. Even if up to 30% of the code is damaged or dirty, it can often still be read. Barcodes become unreadable with even a slight scratch.
4. Size
QR codes can store the same amount of data in a much smaller space compared to barcodes, making them ideal for small products or business cards.
